The View from the Top by Randy

I don’t like roller-coasters; not real ones, not metaphorical ones.

Someone told us in the beginning that cancer is a roller-coaster ride. It’s true. We have had to hold on tight during some steep dives, but we have enjoyed the view from the top on occasion too. At the moment — and who knows how long it will last — we are at the summit.

On Monday, we went to the IU Med Center for Ann’s fifth nerve block. The doctor gave Ann twice as much numbing medicine as before. We hope this leads to quicker, better and longer-lasting pain relief. More importantly, the doctor found that the tumor has not grown. In fact, it might be a tiny bit smaller. It has not spread to the liver. The doc could not see any lymph node involvement, where there had been in the past. And there was no acites — or abdominal fluid — where there had been in the past.

On Tuesday, Ann had chemotherapy. They drew blood to measure the tumor marker. The office called this morning to say that after three straight elevated readings, the marker has dipped slightly(again the roller-coaster thing).

Put it all together and this has been a very good week. I know it sounds crazy. Ann swallowed a scope so they could stab a needle through the lining of her small intestine into the celiac nerve branch next to her pancreas. She had highly-toxic chemicals pumped into her bloodstream through a surgically-implanted port in her chest. Her pain has not yet abated. And it has been a very good week.

And oh, I almost forgot. Because I turned 50 this year, I had a colonoscopy yesterday. It was a piece of cake. Well, not a piece of cake. More like a bowl of jello, 64 ounces of Gatorade and a fistful of laxatives. Everything is fine. I don’t have to have another colonoscopy for 10 years.

God is ever-present!

It HAS been a good week!

Hey, I can see my house from up here!

    Hi Randy and Ann
I can hear the joy in your message; I praise God with
you!! I just got back from Houston Texas after spending
Thanksgiving with my brother-in-law who is battling
cancer as well. It was bittersweet. I can tell you
that your witness of God’s presence in your life on this
journey gives us all an opportunity to look deeper into
our lives and realize that without Him, joy is lost.
Randy, I noticed you weren’t on the air a couple of days,
and now I know. That colonoscopy!!! Ha
You both bless my heart. We continue to pray for you
here at our home in Tell City.
    God bless!!!

Ann & Randy, my husband had mutiple Myloma so I know what you mean about a roller coaster – this paticular roller coster is not a FUN one to be on. I am so happy about the news from IU and I pray the medication will take effect quickly so Ann can enjoy her Christmas pain free. God is good and I see him ever so present in your lives. How blessed are your children to have such great parents. Have a blessed Christmas with your family. Dawn Gregory
